Will Cell Phones Be the Death of the Kindle?
With the latest craze over the Kindle this past holiday season, the future of the device seems to be bright. But will the Kindle fizzle before it ever really gets a going? The iPhone (aka the do-everything robot) and other Smartphones now have the ability to download books straight to their phone for even less cash than the Kindle offers on its titles.Sure the Kindle is great and has that cool screen that's easier on your eyes, but when you can get everything in one place, it might be easier to let the Kindle fall by the wayside. It is a bit bulky ... and it's one more thing to carry around. But it still makes me sad.
It's like going to Wal-Mart. You hate it and there are plenty of other stores out there with better products and a better atmosphere, but you go because it's just too darn convenient. There will be a growing trend in and a wider audience for eReaders, but we predict cell phones will dominate this area.
I've read an ebook on the G1 and as much as I hate to admit it, I liked it. Smaller than the bulky Kindle, it was easy to read on the screen and I liked being able to hold it in my hand. Plus, the phones offer many ebooks for less than $1 or free. So get the app, and in just a few years you'll be able to download iWin: Steve Jobs memoir of how he effectively killed the electronics industry by making the iPhone a do-everything-in-one-place Wal-Mart monster.
