PS3 Motion Controller Launching in March, Dreamcast Titles Coming to PSN?
These leaked document rumors are starting to get a little ridiculous. The latest reveals the PS3 Motion Controller, which we saw at E3, will be coming out in March 2010. The problem is that this wasn’t some document obtained from a company mole, or even a friend of a friend who works in shipping. No, this leak came from the SEGA America FTP site.
We’re a little dubious. Either this is a joke, or SEGA is about to fire someone for seriously screwing up. If this is accurate, Sony will be furious. Regardless, the Word document (screenshot above) posted on the FTP site clearly outlines the timeline and strategy for marketing the Sony PS3 Motion Controller. Here’s the text in case you don’t want to squint at the screenshot:
Motion Controller
- Spring 2010 launch (March in JP)
- No bundle/pricing details yet, should come Sept 1
- Plan on selling 4-5MM units WW
- SCEA agreed to provide a list of Sega IP that would work well with the motion controller, Virtua Tennis was an example
- Motion Controller support allows easy way to differentiate PS3 SKU
- Other differentiation opportunities include PSP/PS3 interoperability – think of features that would make users want to buy both PS3 and PSP SKUs.
It couldn’t be clearer. Sony plans to release the motion controller in Japan sometime in March of next year, with a US release following a few months (possibly less) after that. Also of note, at the time of the meeting this document is covering, there were no bundle or pricing details, but would be coming September 1. That means Sony should have some pricing and bundle information ironed out and sent to partners by now. Planning on posting any September 1 meeting notes to the FTP site, SEGA?
Also interesting is the way the document implies incentives to have people buy a PSP to compliment the motion controllers. Is Sony planning on making the PSP compatible with motion control? Seems like a bad fit considering that you’d need to have the small screen at more than arms length if you’re going to be waving your arms around. The document also mentions a separate SKU for PS3s compatible with Motion Controllers. So not all PS3s will be capable of supporting Motion Controllers? What about current PS3 consoles? Sony better be careful about this one; people won’t want to buy a whole new console after being enticed into already buying a PS3 or PS3 Slim.
The other interesting thing to come of this leaked document is the potential deal Sony could make with SEGA to have all the old Dreamcast titles available on the Playstation Network. That could excite a lot of nostalgic gamers. The wording refers to exclusivity agreements, though, indicating that we may be seeing Dreamcast titles in other venues, not just the PSN.
