Sony got out-publicized by Microsoft and Project Natal at E3, but that doesn't mean the motion controllers Sony demoed at their E3 press conference don't deserve some attention. The biggest problem is that we still don't know much about the controllers or Sony's plans for them. Fortunately, some Sony developers have shed some more light on the project for us.

The guys at Kotaku were able to wrangle some more details out of developers regarding implementation (no new info on pricing and release date is still a vague Spring 2010). For instance, they confirmed the PS3 will be able to track up to four controllers at a time. However, I'm the most excited about news that the PlayStation Eye will support voice recognition and head tracking. Those features will go a long way toward making the Sony motion controllers comparable to Natal (if the features are implemented right).

Developers also said that Sony wants to combine motion controller and Dual Shock (current gamepad) gameplay, which sounds a little cumbersome to me. Does anyone want to be switching back and forth between the two? The motion controller will also take a lot of system resources in the PS3, meaning that developers will need to plan for that when making games. This could mean PS3 games with motion control won't be able to support the best graphics the PS3 can produce because too many system resources are going to motion control. We'll have to see how well developers pay attention to the this.
